Intro to AZ Disruptors

We had a great turnout for Friday's AZ Disruptors lunch. In fact, we had a pact house. We had exceeded our max of 30 people and had a standing room when it came to demos. The energy level was fantastic. It was truly exciting to see all the enthusiasm in the room. There are lots of great startup activities going on locally. Stephen Murphey, who was at the AZ Disruptors lunch told us about the new HackSpace at ASU's Skysong building. Hackspace is a place where anybody can go to work on their project or startup and network with others who are doing the same.

Francine Hardaway reminded us about the Startup Digest, a weekly email newsletter that announces current events that relate to technology startups. Be sure to signup!

I had a chance to put together a short presentation that talks about how we expect to support new software startups at AZ Disruptors. Check out the video:

There was also a very cool demo of a new product, which is still in development, called "CityBot - Decision Engine for Travelers" by Greg Solovyev. I think you'll agree this is an impressive product. Check out Greg's 5-minute demo:

A couple of pictures of the event:

Do to the construction sechedule, we're not sure when the the next AZ Disruptors lunch will be, but stay tuned and join us for the next lunch.

Next Lunch, AZ Disruptors Offices & Demos

Which is better, iOS or Android? What do you think about Google's new CEO being the co-founder, Larry Page? Is Microsoft still relevent? Is Facebook really worth $50 Billion? Why would Groupon turn down $6 billion offer from Google? AOL paid HOW MUCH for Huffington Post? Who's going to win the battle for streaming TV content: Netflix, iTunes, GoogleTV or Amazon?

If you enjoy discussing these quesitons and chatting about technology, you're going to love coming to an AZ Disruptors lunch. Our next one is going to be on Friday February 25th at 11:30am at Axosoft's offices.

5-Minute Demos

We're going to mix it up a bit by having mini pitches. These will be 5-Minute demos of products or services (existing or wireframes) of things that you're working on. We will have no more than 5 such demos. The demos will be in Axosoft's training room, so you'll have access to a projector and seating for about 20 people. We're going to time the demos and stick to a 5-minute limit to accomodate up to 5 demos.

Anybody can RSVP to demo. Just use the RSVP form below to "Buy a Ticket" for RSVP for Demo. These demos do not have to be for new startups.

Office Tour

We will also tour both Axosoft and the AZ Disruptors offices next door which is currently under construction.

We expect a pact house and we are going to limit it to 30 RSVPs for our next lunch, so be sure to RSVP early if you plan to attend.

Let's Get This Party Started

Today marks the start of construction on a brand new 6,000 square foot facility that will eventually be home to a number of software startups in Arizona.

I'm excited that an idea I've been kicking around for a number of years is finally starting to take shape. The idea is simple: Build a place where technology enthusiasts can come together, build cool stuff, and talk to other people who build cool stuff.

The idea is nothing new, not even in Arizona. Some good folks in Chandler (Derek Neighbors and Jade Meskill) have already built a community of technology enthusiasts under one roof at Gangplank. I love what they've done. At Gangplank there are a number of successful software companies benefitting from each other's experiences every day. Companies like Page.ly (wordpress hosting), Authority Labs (keyword rank monitoring) and EventDay (soon to be released event management solution) are just some of the companies that are headquartered in the Gangplank offices. Each company's success adds to the knowledge base concentrated in the Gangplank building. It creates better mentors, advisors, engineers, marketers and designers -- which all help to create more successful businesses.

We need more of that activity in Arizona, and that's what AZ Disruptors is about. We want to help new software startups become successful by bringing them together in a ridiculously productive environment. In this location, there are already a couple of successful, profitable software companies including Axosoft (Agile Project Management Software) and TransferBigFiles.com (rapid file-hosting and sharing solution). We're also lining up a number of super-stars in the tech field that are eager to help (more about that later).

The AZ Disruptors offices are being built adjacent to Axosoft and TransferBigFiles offices in North Scottsdale. Once completed, it will be a single 12,000+ square foot facility.

We expect to be operational with our first set of startups in May of this year, and we have a lot of work to do. If you are interested, be sure to subscribe to this blog either using RSS, Email (see the sidebar to the right) or as a Facebook fan. We will be posting our progress, some ideas on how to build a disruptive company / product, and we'll also be providing instructions on how you can apply to become a part of the activities here at AZ Disruptors.

It's exciting to finally get this party started!
